3 burning issues as Rangers miss chance to close gap on Celtic

A late James Tavernier penalty rescued a point for Rangers against Aberdeen.

The captain's strike from the spot cancelled out a first-half Bojan Miovski goal which the Dons thought was enough to secure all three points.

Barry Robson's men were moments away from sealing three wins out of four against the Ibrox club going into next month's Viaplay Cup final.

However, a VAR check on 90 minutes led to Nick Walsh awarding the visitors a penalty.

While it's a big point for Rangers, they still missed a huge chance to cut the gap on Celtic at the top of the Premiership - something Philippe Clement will be lamenting. It remains at eight points.

Here are three burning issues from the Premiership encounter…

Golden chance missed

The Ibrox club missed a huge chance to make a real fist of the title race. With Celtic dropping points at home to Motherwell yesterday, a rare sight indeed, the opportunity was there for Rangers to cut the gap back to just six points. With the Old Firm derby on the horizon in a month’s time, maintaining that sort of gap until that game would’ve been perfect. Let’s be fair, Rangers’ performance was not terrible. They smacked the bar on two occasions and Leon Balogun missed a sitter. They had enough chances to win the match. But they’ve let Brendan Rodgers’ team off the hook, despite the dramatic fashion in which they earned a draw.

Dealing with two strikers

Most teams nowadays only tend to play with one forward. Long are the days of the traditional 4-4-2 being the popular formation implemented by the majority of managers, with the modern style seemingly all about high pressing and energy across a front three. So, most defenders are not used to facing up against two strikers and taking a man each. And Aberdeen exploited this in Rangers’ backline perfectly. Route one football undid the Gers defence as Ester Sokler nodded on Kelle Roos’ long ball towards Miovski. He was never going to miss with his finishing ability. Clement will be furious at the manner in which his defence were posted missing.

Going down too easy

Todd Cantwell simply needs to stop going down too easily. His dive in the first half of this game was nothing short of embarrassing. Players at all clubs need to be called out for it, there can be no exceptions. There have been a few occasions since his arrival where he appears to have hit the deck under little pressure and there have been other occasions where he’s rightly gone to ground after being fouled. Today was as clear a dive as you’re ever likely to see, though, and if he doesn’t cut that out of his game then his reputation will suffer as a result.
