2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP Instantly Lights A Fire In The Hearts Of GP Bike Fans

[ADDITIONAL UPDATE October 25, 2023: A representative from Yamaha US told RideApart that the company has no comment at this time regarding whether the XSR900 GP is coming to this market. At the same time, they also noted that Yamaha US has not yet released its entire 2024 lineup yet.

You're welcome to be as hopeful about that statement as you like.]

[UPDATE October 25, 2023: Shortly after the Yamaha Motor Europe unveiling of the 2024 XSR900 GP, Yamaha Motor Company Limited in Japan announced that it will also be showing the 2024 XSR900 GP at Japan Mobility Show 2023.

Additionally, the XSR900 GP will make an appearance at EICMA 2023 in Milan, Italy, beginning on November 7, 2023.

The most exciting news of all for riders in Japan is that the 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP should have an official launch in Japan sometime in summer 2024.]

Original piece follows.

On October 24, 2023, Yamaha Motor Europe made the dream of many a fan come true when it finally pulled the covers off the 2024 XSR900 GP. The XSRs have been Yamaha’s sport heritage bikes, so it’s beyond fitting that the XSR900 GP would be the place where Team Blue brought back some of its iconic, race-derived styling cues from the 1980s and ‘90s.

It’s a thoroughly modern machine underneath, but with heritage styling from arguably the most stylish era of motorcycle racing. What could be better? Let’s dive wholeheartedly into those details and take a look. (Try not to drool at those photos; it gets messy.)

The Engine

The 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP is powered by Team Blue’s liquid-cooled, dual overhead cam, three-cylinder 890cc engine. Bore and stroke are 78mm by 61.1mm, and the compression ratio is 11.5 to one. Yamaha lists maximum horsepower at 87.5 kilowatts (about 117.3 horsepower) at 10,000 rpm. Torque is 93 newton-meters (about 68.6 pound-feet) of torque at 7,000 rpm. The CP3 mill is mated to a six-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch and Yamaha’s third generation up and down quickshifter. Cruise control is standard on the XSR900 GP.

Frame, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels, and Tires

Browse either your fond memories or any classic motorcycle auction site and you’ll see Yamahas with Deltabox frames proudly on display. It’s something that Team Blue developed for its GP racers in the ‘80s. It is a design that Yamaha has refined over time to create a more rigid version that you now see on the 2024 XSR900 GP.

Suspension on the 2024 XSR900 GP consists of a fully adjustable KYB setup in both the front and the rear. You’ll find a fully adjustable KYB upside down front fork, as well as a fully adjustable KYB rear link-type suspension.

Brakes consist of a dual caliper setup up front with a pair of 298mm brake discs, and a single caliper setup in the rear with one 245mm brake disc. The wheels are Yamaha spinforged aluminum 17-inch units, and they come wrapped in Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 rubber.

Other Features

The most immediate draw for anyone taking a look at the 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP is, of course, that bodywork. The YZR Grand Prix racer-inspired front fairing, seat hump, and especially the slab-sided design of the passenger seat cover all command instant attention.

Look closer, and you’ll see that the ergonomics have also been revised to fit the XSR900 GP’s ambitions. The bike gets a set of riser clip-on handlebars placed above the top yoke, allowing the rider to more easily crouch forward and put more weight over the front wheel. The foot pegs are adjustable die-cast aluminum units, further refining the sportier seating position for the rider.

Electronics

The 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP gets a new five-inch, full-color TFT display, along with the smartphone connectivity that’s de rigeur these days. The bike uses a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to control the rider aids, including lean sensitive traction control, ABS, slide control, wheelie control, and more.

The 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP comes with three preset riding modes and one custom mode. The presets are Sport, Street, and Rain, and the Custom mode is manually adjustable to suit a rider’s particular needs.

Pricing and Availability

Yamaha Motor Europe announced the 2024 XSR900 GP for the European and UK markets. It has not yet been announced in other markets. As Yamaha is a global manufacturer, it often releases its new models in different markets at different times. So, just because it hasn’t been announced in other markets doesn’t mean that it won’t happen in the future. RideApart reached out to Yamaha US to inquire about this model and will update this piece if we hear back.

Finally, Yamaha Motor Europe has not yet announced pricing for the 2024 XSR900 GP. That’s not uncommon with new model introductions. Typically, OEMs will announce a new model for enthusiasts to ooh and aah over, and then will start to release more specific information regarding pricing and availability for the applicable regions in which it’s being released as the weeks and months roll on. Look for that information in the future; as always, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

What do you think of the 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP? If you’re not in Europe, are you crossing your fingers that it gets released in your region? Let us know in the comments!
