The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp July 23 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2023, questions they face and their roster outlook.
Next up is kicker Matt Prater.
Background
Wow; where to begin?!! Well, with the basics. Prater, who started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Falcons in 2006 and will be 39 on Aug. 10, kicked for Atlanta, the Broncos and Lions before being signed by the Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent in 2021. His 1,780 career points in 250 games is second among active players and 15th all-time. He has a career total of 401 field goals and holds the NFL record for 50-plus-yard field goals with 80, most consecutive 50-plus-yard field goals with 14, most consecutive 55-plus-yard field goals in a season (2023) with six and most consecutive 55-plus-yard field goals with seven. Prater has three field goals of 60 yards of more, tying Greg Zuerlein for the second-most in history and one behind Brett Maher. Overall, he has made 83.5 percent of his field-goal attempts and 74.8 percent from 50 yards or more.
