The Indianapolis Colts selected Viginia tight end Jelani Woods with the No. 73 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
Following the retirement of Jack Doyle, there was a need at the tight end position. Woods present insane upside as arguably the most athletic tight end to ever come out of the draft.
Woods came out of the combine as arguably the most athletic tight end in recent history. At 6-foot-7 and 253 pounds, Woods ran a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash and posted a 37.5-inch vertical.
He didn’t do much production-wise during his first four collegiate seasons at Oklahoma State. After graduating, he transferred to Virginia where he posted 44 receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021.
The Colts are all about draft for upside, and Woods is the clear candidate to do that as the future of the tight end position.
This pick, which initially belonged to the Washington Commanders, was acquired by the Colts this offseason in the trade that involved quarterback Carson Wentz.
Earlier on Friday night, the Colts traded back from the No. 42 overall pick to No. 53 while adding an extra third-rounder in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. With that pick, the Colts added wide receiver Alec Pierce out of Cincinnati.
The remaining picks for the Colts currently stand at Nos. 77, 159, 179, 192, 216 and 239.
