AHMEDABAD: The city's sinkholes strike again, like giant graboids in the 1990 movie 'Tremors', this season on the busiest thoroughfares of Ahmedabad, putting commuters lives at risk. There have been 29 road cave-ins in the last fortnight, 12 in the West Zone, of which eight are on two roads, Ashram Road and 132 Feet Ring Road. Over the last decade, the city has repaired 557 cave-ins according to AMC data.
The principal cause is ageing stormwater lines, some of which are over 40 years old, which crack and collapse and wash away underlying soil. Of the 980km of stormwater drains in the city, the pipes of 200km are more than 40-years old and prone to failure.
