Approximately 16 individuals were arrested on Wednesday night following a pro-Palestine protest at the University at Buffalo's North Campus. The arrests included students and other individuals not affiliated with the university. The arrests were made after the individuals failed to comply with an order to disperse for violating UB’s Picketing and Assembling Policy, which prohibits encampments and overnight assemblies.
According to the university's release, many protesters peacefully left the area after being advised multiple times by UB Police. However, some individuals chose to ignore the warnings and were subsequently arrested. During the arrests, a few individuals attempted to resist, and two officers were assaulted.
The protest was originally organized by the university's chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, with around 50 people participating in the march. Despite warnings from university police to disperse at dusk, approximately 50 individuals continued to protest into the evening.
Following multiple discussions and warnings, arrests were made outside of Hochstetter Hall. The university emphasized that while it respects the right to protest, overnight assemblies and encampments are prohibited on campus. The university stated that individuals are permitted to express their viewpoints through peaceful picketing and demonstrations but must adhere to SUNY rules and UB policies.
Prior to the arrests, five tents were placed on campus by protesters but were removed after being advised by university staff and police.
