15 August 2026 Independence Day: India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, marking 79 years since the country became independent from British rule in 1947. The distinction between 79 years of independence and the 80th Independence Day can be confusing, particularly for people searching online for “15 August 2026 which Independence Day” or “which Independence Day is celebrated in 2026.” The Government of India has itself described the 2026 event as India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations. India became independent on August 15, 1947, and the date has been observed as Independence Day every year since then.
