13-year-old Kaia Minn uses orange peels to develop biodegradable seed pods that could help restore forests

A 13-year-old Massachusetts inventor, Kaia Minn, has developed a biodegradable seed pod made from discarded citrus peels and other plant-based materials, hoping to help restore forests damaged by wildfires while reducing food waste and reliance on plastic-based seed coatings.

According to a report by Patch, Minn began exploring the idea after watching news coverage of devastating wildfires in California and Canada. Concerned about how damaged forests could recover, she started experimenting with ways to protect seeds during their early stages of growth. Her experiments eventually led to a seed carrier designed to shield seeds from physical damage and break down naturally after being placed in the environment.
