11-year-old Florida boy makes history by reading 100 hours to shelter cats and dogs

An 11-year-old Florida boy has made history by completing more than 100 volunteer hours reading books aloud to dogs and cats at an animal shelter. Nehemiah Turner became the first child to cross the 100-hour mark in the Jacksonville Humane Society's Pawsitive Reading programme, where young volunteers read to shelter animals waiting for adoption.

Nehemiah started taking part in the programme in 2024 and has continued visiting the shelter with his grandmother. During his sessions, he sits outside the animals' kennels and reads to them in a calm voice. Over time, the activity became more than a volunteer commitment for him as he formed connections with several animals at the shelter.
