Former Celtic star believes Tierney return is simply a matter of time

A former Celtic star says he is in no doubt that Kieran Tierney will return to Celtic Park – it’s simply a question of when.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad but has been marred by injury problems, with a further injury interrupting his Euro 2024 campaign.

Tierney left Celtic for Arsenal in 2019 for a club-record fee of £25 million but has struggled to maintain a spot in the first team, with Mikel Arteta now favouring Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.

The Scotland international has not featured for the Gunners since coming off the bench in last season’s Community Shield game with Manchester City at Wembley.

Speculation around Tierney’s potential return to his boyhood club has refused to go away, and former Celtic star Aiden McGeady believes a homecoming is definitely on the cards.

Speaking to Boyle Sports, McGeady said: “I think 100% it’s going to happen at some point, Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic, but the timing on that remains to be seen.

“I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t play again for Celtic again, but the whole situation has surprised me because he settled in so well with Arsenal when he first arrived there.

“I don’t even think it was a loss of form, maybe down to the injury, and then all of a sudden Mikel Arteta changes his options and finds a different way of playing.

“I’m very surprised that it hasn’t quite happened for him at Arsenal, but I can’t see him returning to Celtic just now.

“I still think he’ll want to do that slightly later on in his career. But it will 100% happen at some point.”

Tierney’s Arsenal deal expires in 2026.

With Greg Taylor’s contract set to expire in June 2025 and Alex Valle’s loan also ending next summer, Brendan Rodgers could soon be in the market for a left-back.
