10 places in Liverpool unlikely to get a Michelin star but we love anyway

Liverpool has once again been overlooked by the Michelin star restaurant guide, despite the city’s wealth of incredible food outlets.

From high end restaurants to hidden gems, we've got some hugely popular venues that could have gained the city its first Michelin star, but judges didn't seem to recognise their quality.

The French-based group award establishments stars based on on food quality, cooking techniques, value and consistency. Some Merseyside and Lancashire restaurants did make the cut this year.

Fraiche in Birkenhead retained its one Michelin star, as did The Barn in Aughton. Moor Hall has two stars and now Sō–Lō in Aughton joined them as it celebrated a one Michelin star.

However, there are hundreds of other places in Liverpool that we know are never likely to get a fancy Michelin star - but we love them anyway.

From prestigious restaurants to late night takeaway treats, we’ve rounded up the best food the city has to offer.

Casa Italia

When a restaurant has been open for more then 30 years you know the food and its staff must be doing something right. Casa Italia is an absolute favourite among Scousers with regular queues outside most nights as hungry diners wait for a table.

The traditional atmosphere of Casa Italia is one of the secrets of its success.

Homebaked

The iconic Anfield bakery, ran as a cooperative, fills the stomachs of thousands of Liverpool FC fans pre and post match. With a cafe in St George’s Hall too, it’s easier than ever to enjoy its delicious Scouse and Shankly pies.

Maggie May’s

Maggie Mays on Bold Street (Liverpool Echo)

Based on Bold Street, Maggie May's is known for serving a true bowl of Scouse. It comes with crusty bread and either beetroot or red cabbage - and some customers like it with some HP brown sauce on the top.

One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: "We chose to eat here as my partner wanted to try traditional scouse (stew). "He was very impressed with his meal and said it was just like his Nan used to make."

Nabzy’s

It’s all about the red salt.

Even though there are other chip shops just moments away, you’ll always find Nabzy’s queue out the door come 2am - we need that red salt or we won’t survive the night.

The Mayflower

Food from the Mayflower Restaurant on Duke Street (Liverpool Echo)

Getting a chippy or a Chinese on the way home from a night out is a must - and where better than the Mayflower? You can sit down to a full meal with your mates and get home happy, full, and probably still a bit drunk.

Steve’s

Steve's chippy in Aigburth (Liverpool Echo)

One of the longest running chip shops in Liverpool, not only boasts a long life span but a huge reputation too. Steve’s is based in Aigburth on Ashfield Road and has been around for more than 60 years.

Liverpool has no shortage of chippies, but Steve’s manages to draw in customers who drive miles just to try it. The Aigburth staple has been at the same location since 1964 and is still run by Steve’s family today.

Based just off a main junction - and set in among rows of houses no less - it’s difficult to park outside when you visit Steve’s but the effort is worth it.

Lobster Pot

If you’re getting the last train home from Central station, Lobster Pot is THE place to be.

Given it has featured on a massive advert welcoming tourists to the city at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the Lobster Pot had to be included in this list.

Spitroast

Chicken lovers of Liverpool will be aware of an independent restaurant that has taken both north and south of the city by storm. Spitroast has been hailed ‘better than Nando’s’ .

The restaurant has venues on Smithdown Road and South Road. Although both restaurants are fairly small, they have got rave reviews and a loyal customer base.

Georgie Porgy Cafe

This cafe is the place to go for your home comforts. Another Anfield favourite, Georgie Porgy serves delicious breakfasts, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, pies and other traditional British grub.

Blackdoor Bar and Bistro
