10 lakh tonnes of wheat still stuck at Kandla port

AHMEDABAD: Two weeks after the Centre announced an export ban, 10 lakh tonnes of wheat continue to be stuck outside the Kandla port.

Soon after the ban was announced, some 5,000 trucks carrying wheat consignments ended up waiting for the Customs to clear the cargo.

Even after the Union ministry of commerce permitted wheat cargo to be cleared till May 13, huge pileup remained at Kandla port as many trucks with wheat consignments were en route to the port when the announcement was made.

“Some relief is likely soon for truckers and warehouses as two of the 10 vessels which were mid-sea have been allowed by DGFT to be berthed at Kndla port. This will ease the pileup significantly,” said Harish Maheshwari of Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
