In a statement Friday, NASCAR confirmed an employee of a private contractor working on the construction of the Chicago Street Course suffered a “fatal medical emergency.”

The front straightaway and pit road areas are located on South Columbus Drive and run along a two-block stretch that will take the Xfinity and Cup fields past the iconic Buckingham Fountain, a Chicago landmark dedicated in 1927 and one of the largest in the world.

Saturday’s 300-mile race was originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start on Saturday, but with an expected heavy rain showers on its way, NASCAR moved up the start time to Noon ET.
