Experts at Edinburgh's National Galleries of Scotland say the previously unknown work was found on the back of Van Gogh's painting Head of a Peasant Woman, which they were X-raying ahead of an exhibition.

As it prepared for an exhibit, the National Galleries of Scotland found a previously unknown self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh, covered by glue and cardboard, on the back of another of his paintings.

Professor Frances Fowle, a senior curator of French art at the museum, said one of her colleagues had sent her a text to share the news of the extraordinary discovery
