The boards of the telecom operators True Corporation and Total Access Communication (DTAC) have agreed to call their merged company True Corporation.

The country’s telecommunications regulator has cleared the way for the country’s second and third largest mobile operators — True Corp and Total Access Communication (DTAC) — to merge, but with conditions.

The bosses of the parent firms of True Corp and Total Access Communication (DTAC) insist the country’s telecom regulator has no power to approve or reject their giant mobile business merger, but can only impose conditions to govern it.

Despite staunch opposition from some consumer advocates and academics, the planned merger of True Corporation and Total Access Communications (DTAC) is expected to pass through legal and administrative checks as the regulator indicates it has no power to block the deal, only to iron out measures to govern it.

The telecom regulator has set up a subcommittee to follow up on the planned merger of Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC) and True Corporation Plc as well as draft measures to ensure the move will not harm the public interest.
