Somali security forces have ended a deadly hours-long siege by Al Shabaab militants who stormed a popular hotel in the capital Mogadishu overnight, the national police spokesman said on Monday, adding that eight people had been killed in the attack.

There has been no immediate word of any casualties. Al-Shabab said its fighters attacked the hotel Villa Rose, which has a restaurant popular with government and security officials.

Somalia's government said on Wednesday 49 al Shabaab fighters had been killed in a military operation in Lower Shabelle region, the latest in a months-long campaign aimed at seizing territory long held by the Islamist group.

Kenyan military official said a lone attacker fired indiscriminately, wounding five soldiers, before he was gunned down.
