BEIRUT — A monthslong defense that saw Ukrainian troops endure relentless bombardment and ferocious street skirmishes against their Russian adversaries ended Friday when military authorities ordered a retreat from the besieged city of Severodonetsk.

Local governor says troops have received order to leave the city after weeks of fighting against Russian troops.

Ukrainian troops will "have to be withdrawn" from the mostly Russian-occupied battleground city of Severodonetsk, the regional governor said on Friday.

"Defenders of Severodonetsk will leave the city for new, more fortified positions," local leader says.

EU leaders granted "candidate status" to Ukraine in its bid to join the bloc, as tensions deepened over Russian gas supplies and Moscow's forces closed in on key cities.
