East Renfrewshire's council leader Owen O'Donnell said research into the impact of the crisis on the area was 'scary' as almost 1,000 children could be pushed into poverty.

Council leader Owen O'Donnell has issued a stark warning over the financial situation which he said is due to long-term underfunding of local authorities.

The group will be set up after a Labour amendment to an SNP motion was passed at a full council meeting last week.

Planning permission was granted for a new leisure centre and theatre in Eastwood Park in January but councillors have raised concerns over rising costs throughout the project's development.

A coalition between the SNP and Labour has been cast aside as a new minority administration was formed with the support of East Renfrewshire Council's two independent councillors.

Labour intends to run the council with the support of two independents but the SNP, which is the largest single party, will put forward its own plan for a minority administration.

There are over 40 candidates hoping to be elected as one of 18 councillors across five wards on East Renfrewshire Council.
