As concerns of a global food crisis heighten, Ukraine was granted access on Monday to ship its first container of grain, carrying 26,000 metric tons of corn from the port of Odessa to Tripoli, Lebanon, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The first shipment of Ukrainian grain left the port of Odesa on Monday just over a week after Ukraine and Russia signed a deal with Turkey and the UN aimed at restarting grain exports from Ukraine’s ports on the Black Sea.

Russian military port blockades have worsened the global food crisis.

The deal to open up Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, brokered by the UN and Turkey, is expected to facilitate the much-needed export of several million tonnes of grain and other food products, and potentially ease an international food crisis.
