Chandrayaan-3 heroes’ alma maters, unsung till now, finally bask in the limelight

ISRO on August 25 said rover Pragyaan successfully traversed 8m and payloads LIBS and APXS turned on. All payloads on propulsion, lander and rover modules performing nominally. ILSA, RAMBHA & ChaSTE payloads turned on to measure seismic activity, plasma environment and surface thermal properties of Moon.

On Aug. 23, India's Chandrayaan-3 became the first mission to successfully land near the moon's south pole. But why is this dark, shadowy area so important to space agencies?

In 2019, India attempted to land a spacecraft on the Moon – and ended up painting a kilometres-long streak of debris on its barren surface. Now the Indian Space Research Organisation has returned in triumph, with the Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully touching down near the south pole of Earth’s rocky neighbour.

India made history as the first country to land near the south pole of the Moon with its Chandrayaan-3 lander on Aug. 23, 2023. This also makes it the first country to land on the Moon since China in 2020.

Because it's there, but also because it has resources that can support future lunar bases and Mars missions.

2023 is a busy year for lunar missions, with India, Russia, U.S., China and Japan all launching missions to the Moon. ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 mission is running on schedule, with all systems working normally. Pragyan rover has rolled out from the Vikram lander and is exploring the moon's mineral composition and seismic activities. All payloads aboard the lander and rover have been switched on and are working well.

India's successful Chandrayaan-3 mission has opened up potential to use Moon as take-off point for future planetary missions, bolstering India's credentials to participate in such explorations. ISRO has demonstrated ability to land an object outside Earth, and explore the south pole, becoming first to do so.

India is finally on the Moon. It took an arduous journey of years, a failed mission and a voyage of 40 days for Chandrayaan-3 to be the first to arrive on the Moon’s dark side or south pole on Wednesday. But why at all are we there?
