State Rep. Jarvis Johnson and emergency room nurse Molly Cook are duking it out in a sleepy special election to briefly occupy the seat vacated when Whitmire was elected mayor.

Both of the candidates running in the May 28, 2024, Democratic primary runoff election for Texas State Senate District 15 — Molly Cook (D) and Jarvis Johnson (D) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Ballotpedia tracked five new state-level candidates in Texas between Nov. 20-26. This was equal to the number of candidates tracked last week. 

State Sen. John Whitmire, first elected in 1982, and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, in office since 1995, could be vacating seats that haven’t been open for decades. The election calendar, however, may bring a tough decision for one or both.
