The siege ends after an hours-long exchange of fire that left at least 21 people dead, according to police and witnesses.

Somalia’s security forces battled militant fighters for a second consecutive night in Mogadishu’s Hayat hotel, the largest siege in the country since Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected president in May.

More than 100 people were also wounded. The Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, which has ties with al-Qaida, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The initial blast was caused by a suicide bomber then there was a second blast outside the hotel just a few minutes later, meaning rescuers helping casualties from the first blast were then also injured
