KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Moments after the end of the Chiefs’ training camp practice on Monday at Missouri Western State University, senior assistant and quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy was headed off the field when fans started chanting his name (“Nagy, Nagy”) seeking to lure him over for autographs.

“There’s the grieving process — I think that’s normal,” the former Bears head coach said. “But you have to use that to be better.”

Matt Eberflus said the Bears starters, including Justin Fields, will play a "good amount" vs. Chiefs in the first preseason game.

Even in early practices, the Bears look like they’ll push the limits of aggressiveness and physicality under Matt Eberflus and defensive coordinator Alan Williams, “Play like your hair’s on fire,” Williams said.

“We’re still adding plays as we go, and he’s learning the scheme,” coach Matt Eberflus explained after a rough day for the offense.

“The way that they just hold us accountable is crazy compared to what we’re used to, really,” said cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who was pleased with the change.

The slog is starting. After rookies report to Halas Hall on Saturday and veterans on Tuesday, the Bears will begin training camp for a season that seems destined to leave them near the bottom of the standings and the top of the draft order.

The quarterback’s progress is the only storyline as the team starts preparing for the season.
