The Supreme Court has sought the response of the Gujarat government and the Enforcement Directorate on journalist Mahesh Langa’s petition seeking bail in a money laundering case linked to an alleged financial fraud.

The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday issued a notice on a regular bail plea moved by journalist Mahesh Langa in a money laundering case linked to two cheating FIRs against the journalist, LiveLaw reported.

A Gujarat sessions court has granted anticipatory bail to The Hindu journalist Mahesh Langa in an FIR lodged against him by an ad agency owner for “cheating” him of Rs 28.68 lakh and threatening “with negative publicity using media influence”, Livelaw reported.

The Hindu journalist Mahesh Langa has been booked in a third FIR for alleged fraud and intimidation based on a complaint from a business owner, the Ahmedabad police said in a statement after a press conference on Tuesday.

Five press bodies have condemned the second FIR against The Hindu journalist Mahesh Langa. Four of them have urged the Press Council of India to “perform its mandate of safeguarding the freedom of the press”.

Over four days after a second FIR was lodged against The Hindu journalist Mahesh Langa, his colleagues took to X to condemn the police action and uphold “a journalist’s right to obtain and process a confidential or ‘sensitive’ official document in line with their work”.

Mahesh Langa, a senior assistant editor at The Hindu, who has been in judicial custody in a case of alleged GST evasion since October 8, has now been booked for possession of documents related to the Gujarat Maritime Board, Indian Express reported.
