As a religious event turned into a site of chaos at Hathras in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, families of hundreds of dead and injured scrambled to locate their loved ones – searching hospitals across the region “without much help” from the administration.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the SC on Wednesday seeking direction to appoint a five-member expert committee under the supervision of a retired Top Court judge to enquire into the Hathras stampede incident where more than 120 people were killed on July 2. More than 50 people died and over a 100 are estimated to be injured in a stampede at a satsang, or religious event, in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh, as per the Indian Express. The number of those dead, a majority of whom are women, is likely to increase.
