WASHINGTON, D.C. — California's landmark ban on private prisons and immigrant detention facilities saw its fate sealed when a federal court officially repealed the 2020 law.

The Social Justice Legal Foundation says one of the country's largest private prison operators knowingly exposed ICE detainees to the disinfectant HDQ Neutral.

Participants say poor living conditions and wages of $1 a day have pushed them to launch the weeks-long protest.

California regulators levied $104,510 in fines against the private prison operator GEO Group last month after detained immigrant workers at the Golden State Annex in Central California complained about unsafe conditions, including a lack of protective equipment and proper training, while cleaning the facility for $1 per day.
