For the first time, the world is seeing two simultaneous outbreaks of the Marburg virus – one in Equatorial Guinea, the other in Tanzania. The Marburg virus is just as deadly as Ebola, to which it is closely related, but it has been extremely rare until now.

Equatorial Guinea said it has recorded 13 cases of Marburg disease since February, after the World Health Organization urged the country to officially report new cases.

Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) (AFP) - Two more people in Equatorial Guinea have died of Marburg haemorrhagic fever, a cousin of the Ebola virus, bringing the toll of fatalities to 11, the authorities say.

The virus, which has an incubation period of between five and 10 days when it is not transmitted, has symptoms of fever, muscle pain and headaches.
