Most of the state’s Republican candidates for governor offered exuberant praise for the anticipated decision upending abortion protections — but the GOP establishment pick declined to weigh in on the political tripwire.

The potential of erosion or end of abortion rights boosts Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and could imperil GOP primary candidate Richard Irvin, who is not campaigning on his anti-abortion stance.

Monday marked an Illinois State Board of Elections deadline to file a required quarterly report of contributions and expenditures, but a number of primary candidates had not yet filed their reports late Monday.

Irvin can tap limitless funds from billionaire Ken Griffin, he’ll have history on his side as potentially the state’s first Black governor.

But does ballot position matter? Some experts say no. “It’s tradition. It’s part of the summer camp aspect of campaigning,” said political science professor Christopher Mooney. “But does it have an impact on average? No, it doesn’t. But again, in an individual case, who’s to say?”

The endorsement comes less than two weeks after Michael Flynn appeared before the U.S. House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, during which the former national security adviser exercised his Fifth Amendment right.
