WASHINGTON — The Justice Department and a pharmaceutical company on Friday asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the court fight over a commonly used abortion drug in order to keep a court ruling restricting availability of the drug from taking effect this weekend.

New court-imposed restrictions on the abortion pill mifepristone could cut off access to the drug entirely for months, the Biden administration and the drug's distributor, Danco Laboratories, said in petitions asking the U.S. Supreme Court to lift the curbs.

The ruling comes after a federal judge in Texas suspended the FDA's 2000 approval of mifespristone, a drug used for medication abortions.

Anti-abortion advocates are trying to revive the long-dormant 1873 Comstock Act, which banned mailing of anything related to abortion or contraception, in a lawsuit about mifepristone, an abortion-inducing drug.

Obstetricians, gynecologists, other medical professionals, and abortion rights advocates petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday to urge Danco Laboratories to seek approval of mifepristone, a pill used in terminating early pregnancies at home, for miscarriage management.
