The gain and oilseed sector of the commodities market was virtually unchanged in Q1, posting a marginal gain. As the agricultural products that feed and fuel the world head into Q2, the 2025 crop year begins with the planting season.

Wheat prices are heading into the 2025 crop year at much lower levels than in 2022 and 2023. Wheat prices reached lows in August 2024, and while they are consolidating near the low, the recent trend has been higher.

The grain sector of the commodities market continued to move lower in Q4 2024 and was the worst-performing sector in 2024. While all grain and oilseed markets posted losses in 2024, corn was the only futures market moving to the upside in Q4.

After reaching multi-year highs, and in CBOT wheat’s case, an all-time peak in 2022, grain and oilseed futures prices have plunged. Farmers in the Northern Hemisphere are on vacation after the 2024 harvest, hoping that 2025 will be a better year and prices can rebound.
