Truex, whose No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, had not shown to be particularly fast in Saturday’s practice session, rocketed to the top of the final round of qualifying with an average lap speed of 169.409 mph.

The top five speeds from Saturday practice all came from the first 20-minute session with Chase Elliott leading the way with an average lap speed of 168.232 mph in his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

What had been a very tame race, turned a bit chaotic down the stretch with six cautions in the final 56 of 158 laps.

With just under 25 of 267 laps remaining in Sunday’s NASCAR contest, Hamlin worked his way around William Byron and set his sights on leader Larson.

Hamlin, in his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, topped the speed chart with an average lap speed of 174.887 in the second 20-minute session.
