Anthony Driver, who heads the Community Commission on Public Safety and Accountability, said the commonalities he has discovered between police and the public has been the “defining moment” of his 14-month tenure.

More than half of the applicants came from people affiliated at one time with CPD. The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability will submit three names to Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson by mid-July.

Joe Ferguson, the city’s former inspector general, said the lobbying raises “some unseemly appearances which, given that this is Chicago, should be of concern.”

The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability said the incoming mayor won’t have outsized influence in recommending candidates and won’t be able to subvert the selection process.
