Anthony Driver, president of the Community Commission on Public Safety and Accountability, joined the chairman of the City Council’s Police Committee in sounding the alarm about restrictions so severe, they have contributed heavily to an alarming citywide surge in robberies.

A civilian commission narrowed the field to Angel Novalez, Shon Barnes and Larry Snelling. Mayor Brandon Johnson now has 30 days to either choose one or reject them all and order the panel to launch another search.

A group of City Council members is getting heat — and should — for their letter carping that one member of the Chicago Police Department’s top brass did not get an in-person interview for the superintendent’s job.

The criticism came after the alderpersons signed a letter expressing “disappointment and dismay” that the panel leading the search didn’t give a follow-up interview to the Chicago Police Department’s patrol chief.

Anthony Driver, president of the Community Commission on Public Safety and Police Accountability, said input from rank-and-file officers at an FOP meeting last week is something former CPD Supt. David Brown never would have allowed.

The vast majority of people have followed the rules and should not be punished for the mistakes of a few.

“The community has lost so much trust in the system that not a single person dialed 911,” Anthony Driver said during a forum on community policing hosted by the City Club of Chicago.

Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson’s transition team members “have not tried to influence our process. They have not tried to submit names,” said Anthony Driver, president of the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, which is conducting the search.
