A federal judge has ruled that Illinois must move most of the inmates housed at Stateville Correctional Center by Sept. 30 because of decrepit conditions

The employees have affiliated with Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which has signed up members at other Chicago institutions.

A joint statement from Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Roberta Lynch, executive director of AFSCME Council 31, said the agreement would “improve the economic security and working lives of thousands of dedicated frontline” employees in about a dozen city departments.

Staff members are pushing for a vote on whether to affiliate with Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

By a 35-11 vote, the employees agreed to affiliate with Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

In the last 20 months, the union’s 3,000 city employees have received a 2% pay raise as inflation has spiked. For starters, the union says it wants a “fair” wage.

Staff members issued a letter stating their desire to affiliate with Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The policy comes just in time for Edwina Mitchell, a food protection employee for the city’s Department of Public Health. “It means everything. I already feel a little stress-free,” said the mother of a 4-year-old and who is due to give birth to her second child in January.

The employees seek an affiliation with Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
