There was a huge shock at Newbury as Zoulu Chief won at staggering odds of 150/1 – making those punters brave enough to have a flutter fortunes.
And winning trainer Heather Main admitted the rank outsider could now be heading to Royal Ascot next month. She admitted: "We were hoping to go to Royal Ascot with him and today makes us more hopeful. No particular race as of yet, we need to think about this trip."
Winning jockey Marco Ghiani has only recently returned from a drugs ban and bolted home in the six-furling, 2.40 race at Newbury, beating 5/4 favourite Baheer and 25/1 shot Etihad Rail who was third. Trainer Main is an opera singer and, incredibly, this is not the first time she has had a winner at massive odds. She boasted 125-1 Island Bandit on the same track just last August. Racing TV host Anthony Dunkley described the dominant victory as 'the shock of all shocks'.
Nine horses have won at a price of 200/1 in Britain this century, with the most recent being Inspiratrice who was first past the post at Taunton in December 2022.
