Zinc prices have staged a remarkable rally in recent months, emerging as one of the best-performing base metals in the global commodity market. Last week, zinc prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) climbed to their highest levels in nearly four years, while MCX zinc futures surged to an all-time high near Rs 393 per kg. The recent gains have been fueled by a combination of supply disruptions, declining inventories, and expectations of stronger industrial demand.
The rally reflects growing concerns about the availability of refined zinc in the global market. Zinc prices have gained significantly over the past year as mine production growth has failed to keep pace with consumption in several regions. Production interruptions in China, lower output from some major miners, and falling exchange inventories have tightened market conditions. At the same time, resilience in infrastructure spending and manufacturing activity has boosted demand for galvanized steel, the largest end-use segment for zinc.
