Frankie Musonda admits Ayr will have to get ruthless when their league season begins.
The former Raith centre half strolled yesterday's competitive debut for the Honest Men against League Two Elgin.
United were made to sweat and rely on penalties for a bonus point win.
And Musonda knows he and his new teammates will need to be far more clinical in the weeks and months ahead.
He told the Ayrshire Post: “I thought we played well enough but missed chances - and you can’t afford to do that.
“We dominated possession and that suits my game, now we need to take this and try to build some momentum.
“Turning performances into results is what it’s all about and hopefully by the time the league campaign starts, we’re up and firing.”
Musonda, who has signed a two year deal after his switch from Kirkcaldy, said: “On the pitch has been easy for me to settle in.
“I’m still in the process of moving between Fife and Glasgow, so there’s all that to deal with, but the boys here have made it a great place to come and be part of.
“We’re still learning how each other plays and the more games we play, that can only get better.”
The defender, who is a Zambian internationalist, has helped attract a new fanbase for United since his summer signing.
And he smiled: "I'm not on Facebook but I've heard a bit about it. My mum keeps me up to date with all the talk.
"To be fair, it tends to follow me around wherever I go...I also had it happen at Raith and the fans there took to it.
"And I've already had some fans come up to me here and ask me about the Zambia thing, which is nice.
"I'm sure the Zambian fans will be keeping close tabs on Ayr United from now on and checking their results."
Ayr experimented with a back three against Elgin – perhaps with a long term view to involving Arsenal centre half Alex Kirk, who sat this one out on the bench.
But the hosts spent much of the first half struggling for rhythm and should have been behind when Kane Hester rounded Charlie Albinson, only for the keeper to make a great last ditch stop.
At the other end, new boy Dipo Akinyemi was denied by a point blank save as Ayr looked for the opener.
United had chances after the break as the tempo was upped with sub Mikey Hewitt going closest.
But it was down to spot kicks and Albinson stood tall to save from Chris Antoniazzi and Kenny MacInness.
Akinyemi missed for Ayr by rattling the bar but they prevailed 4-3 to land the extra point.
