Zambia star Frankie Musonda on signing up famous names to the Ayr United cause

Frankie Musonda has told how his Ayr spell is winning over new fans to the United cause.

The Zambian international – who is due to represent his country against Israel next week – is signing up adopted Honest Men including Rangers star Fashion Sakala.

And he hopes an injury picked up in the draw with Morton won’t scupper his chance to pull on national colours again.

Musonda said: “I’m supposed to go to Israel for a friendly next week and miss our match against Inverness.

“I’m loving it [with Zambia] and I seem to be quite a big part of their plans.

“I’m really enjoying it and I’d be disappointed if I missed the game.

“It’s something I feel very lucky and privileged to do.

“Fashion Sakala lives in Glasgow too. He’s come round to mine a few times for dinner and I’ve gone round to his.

“We see each other quite a lot. He doesn’t have many family over here so we try to see as much of each other as we can.

“We have got quite close. I’ve been going to a few of his games recently, like the Champions League games.”

Musonda revealed: “He’s turning into an Ayr United fan - and there seem to be a lot of them in Zambia now.

“They all check the scores. It’s same with the boys who play in the Premier League in England – they all check my scores.

“There's Patson Daka at Leicester and Enock Mwepu at Brighton, although obviously he’s retired now.

“Everyone is interested in each other’s scores. I watch out for the boys who play in Denmark and Sweden.

“They probably didn’t know about Ayr United until I came here.

“I like to play against the best when I can and it’s a good opportunity to swap shirts when you play the international games.

“I’m a bit disappointed if I won’t be able to go.”

Musonda qualifies for Zambia through his father, Patrick, and has quickly become a favourite with the nation and its fans.

He said: “My mum moved over to Zambia to work and met my dad. They came back to England and had me.

“He lives back over there now and sees me on billboards and on the TV.

“It’s a big thing for my family and they’re very proud.

“The town where they live, Kabwe, is a couple of hours outside Lusaka where the home stadium is – and they love it.

“I try to tell them not to get too carried away but they can’t help it.

“My dad is supposed to be coming over in December for one of our games here.

“He doesn’t get to see many of my games here so it will be good.”
