A local "Yu-Gi-Oh!" tournament in Oregon went viral after its weekly events were temporarily suspended due to repeated complaints about player hygiene.
The decision was announced by Chronos Games & Gifts, an independent game store in Beaverton, Oregon.
In a message posted on the store's official Discord server, organizers said they would pause "Yu-Gi-Oh!" events for one week after receiving multiple complaints about poor personal hygiene and improper restroom use during tournaments.
Game Store Takes Action After Customer Complaints
According to Chronos Games & Gifts via IGN, several customers shared negative feedback about the conditions during recent "Yu-Gi-Oh!" events. Organizers said the complaints affected the overall tournament experience and prompted the temporary suspension.
The store reminded players to follow Konami's official tournament policies and encouraged attendees to report any behavior that violates event guidelines. Organizers emphasized that maintaining a clean and respectful environment helps ensure everyone can enjoy organized play.
The announcement quickly spread across social media, where many players supported the decision. Others expressed surprise that reminders about basic hygiene are still necessary at competitive gaming events.
Konami Has Official Hygiene Rules For Tournaments
While this was something different in the first place, hygiene requirements are not really new to competitive "Yu-Gi-Oh!"
Since 2019, Konami's official tournament policy has stated that players who arrive wearing excessively dirty clothing or who emit strong body odor may receive penalties during sanctioned events. Tournament officials are authorized to ask participants to correct the issue immediately.
If the problem cannot be resolved, organizers may remove the player from the event to maintain a comfortable environment for everyone.
The policy was introduced after recurring complaints from players and tournament organizers, making personal hygiene an official standard of conduct rather than an unwritten expectation.
Hygiene Remains a Topic Within the Trading Card Community
This is not the first time hygiene has become a point of discussion in the trading card game community.
Over the years, players have reported unpleasant conditions at some competitive events, with some saying poor hygiene discouraged them from attending future tournaments.
According to Kotaku, one widely shared incident in 2024 involved a player leaving a "Yu-Gi-Oh!" event because of overwhelming body odor inside the venue. The attendee later clarified that the situation was serious enough to prevent them from comfortably participating.
Although such incidents represent only a small portion of the community, they continue to fuel conversations about tournament etiquette and player responsibility.
Creating a Better Tournament Experience
There's nothing wrong with joining tournaments even if it's the most unknown tournament in the community, but what's wrong is joining without minding what others might think about one's hygiene.
Tournament organizers hope simple habits can improve the experience for everyone. Showering before events, wearing clean clothes, using deodorant, and following proper restroom etiquette are basic practices that help create a more welcoming atmosphere.
