A young Scots woman who was given six months to live after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer has died aged 31.
Sophy Mitchell, from Dundee, was told she was terminally ill after returning from a holiday in April this year. Her death was announced by her husband Kevin Mitchell who said he was by her side when she passed away at the Roxburghe House hospice on Wednesday.
The night before her death, Kevin said Sophy had taken a bad turn last night, posting a message on Facebook to keep friends informed.
He wrote: "This is the best way to inform, everybody as I know people message Sophy everyday. But Sophy has taken a turn for the worst, she is comfortable and resting.
"There will not be any visiting apart from close family. please everybody pray for Sophy. Sophy has made this so easy for me with her bravery. Love her so much x"
He confirmed college worker Sophy had died on Wednesday and shared a letter she had wrote.
It read: "If you are reading this then my amazing husband has announced my death…
"Well that’s me, I’ve went to “sleep” for good.
"I’m at peace now they say but truth be told.. I know I didn’t feel at peace! I felt anger, hurt and sadness at what I’ve left behind.
"I tried to fight and fight but I’m too tired now and just can’t do it any longer.
"Please know your body, please enjoy life, don’t moan over the wee things, book trips, take risks, do what makes you happy, laugh, love.. thanks to everyone who raised money and gave me so many good memories that I’d have never been able to afford.
"If love or money could’ve saved me then I know I’d be here. My life changed OVER night. From working a job I adored one day… to being signed off the next.
"WHY ME.
"Why why why.
"Anyway rant over. I want you to all remember smiling Sophy."
Sophy had been experiencing symptoms since December 2021 and ended up in A&E in extreme pain in January.
She was told she had a bladder infection but believed something more sinister was wrong. A lump was eventually found and she was informed she had just months to live after a biopsy.
She began sharing her cancer journey to inspire others.
The brave fighter had recently fulfilled her dying wish of being on Loose Women as she enjoyed a Zoom call from her hospital bed with stars from the hit TV show.
She even received a heartfelt message from Lorraine Kelly two days ago.
In a touching note, accompanied by some goodies, the presenter said: "To Sophy, thinking of you. Sending so much love. Lorraine xxxx"
