Young mum in coma cried when dad spoke as family say she can 'hear us'

A mum who was fighting for her life in a hospital in Turkey is set to return home today.

Melissa Kinsella, collapsed in an airport after suffering a seizure. She was on holiday with partner Jay Smith, his family and three children, Chloe, nine, Beau, four, and Romi, two. The 30-year-old, from Moreton, was due to fly home on Monday, May 15 but was instead rushed to hospital. Doctors told her family she had swelling on her brain and heart.

Melissa was taken to intensive care in a coma and was unable to breathe for herself. A GoFundMe campaign has been raised to cover medical costs, as Melissa did not have medical travel insurance.

Thanks to generous donations, Melissa will fly home via air ambulance from Turkey back to the UK today, Wednesday, May 24.

In an update, Melissa's mum said: "So today is the day we get to bring our beautiful daughter Melissa Bridget Kinsella home . We can’t thank everyone enough for everything you have done and giving our three little granddaughter’s a chance of having their mummy back.

"We are absolutely blown away with the help, love and support we have had and hopefully soon we will be telling Melissa all about this holiday from hell we have all be through. Thank you everyone for all your kindness we are forever in yours debt."

The family said Melissa has also been showing positive signs of some recovery. The 30-year-old's mum added: "So a little positive news this morning, when her pop's spoke she moved again and a tear rolled down her eye.

"Doctors said there is more brain activity today and just needs to bring herself out of a coma. Still critical but definitely positive today. She definitely can hear us."

The GoFundMe was launched by Melissa's friend Rebecca Dath. It had a target of £45,000 but has now raised more than £50,135. Rebecca said Melissa had complained on social media the day before she collapsed that she thought she may be suffering from heatstroke.

She told the ECHO: "She was vomiting, felt unwell and that was the day before. When she got to the airport, she had a seizure and collapsed. That's been it since, she has been in intensive care on life support in Turkey."

Rebecca added: "Doctors don't know what has caused it, but she has swelling on the brain and swelling on her heart.

"Missy's mum and dad were holidaying in Turkey in another area with Missy's auntie and uncles and cousins. Jay rang her auntie because her heart stopped and her children were there."
