Young female police officer suffers 'life-changing' injuries in London stabbing

A young female police officer has been left with 'life-changing' injuries after being stabbed in central London, police have revealed.

She was stabbed in the arm by a man in the Leicester Square area at round 6am this morning (Friday). A male officer was also stabbed three times in the neck and once in the chest, but 'should make a full recovery', Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said.

The officers spotted an armed man close to the theatre district this morning. He needed to be tasered to bring him to the ground, but the two officers were stabbed in the tussle.

It was originally reported that two males officers were injured in the incident, but it has since confirmed that one was a female. A man - aged in his 20s - was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker.

He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged and is in police custody. A cordon remains in place around the busy area as forensics scour the scene.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related. In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "On Friday, September 16, at around 6am police encountered a male with a knife in the area of Leicester Square.

"Two officers received stab wounds and are currently being treated in hospital. We await further updates on their conditions.

"Their families are aware. The incident is not being treated as terror related."

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said the incident was not believed to be related to the Queen's death. He described the stabbing as a 'terrible event'.

"It is a terrible event. We do not believe it to be terror-related, and equally we do not believe it at this time to be related to the events that have been occurring this week", Mr Cundy said.
