Young allrounder Hardie named Scorchers' BBL captain

Emerging allrounder Aaron Hardie will captain the all-conquering Perth Scorchers for the rest of the BBL campaign, filling in for the injured Ashton Turner.

Turner will miss the rest of the Scorchers' title defence after suffering a meniscus tear in his right knee.

But even without Turner, Perth remain favourites to win a record third-straight title after going undefeated in their first three games.

Hardie, who made his ODI and T20 debuts for Australia this year, is coming off a match-winning knock against the Hobart Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

"One of our great strengths is we're comfortable using that experience and knowledge to make the team better as a collective," the 24-year-old said.

"I'm sure the whole squad will remain focused and united to give us the best chance of winning another title."

Scorchers coach Adam Voges was confident his side could fill the massive hole left by Turner.

"Clearly, losing AT is disappointing, but his injury presents an opportunity for Aaron to display his leadership skills during the tournament," Voges said.

"We have long viewed Aaron as a leader of promise.

"He will have plenty of support from those around him - the coaches, vice-captain Josh Inglis, and the rest of a very experienced playing squad.

"We have full faith the group will rally around Aaron and attack the rest of the season with the same intensity and focus that has brought us success in recent years."

The Scorchers will host the winless Melbourne Renegades at Optus Stadium on Tuesday.
