Young agrees Edinburgh contract extension after impressive first season

GLEN Young has agreed a contract extension with Edinburgh, having impressed head coach Mike Blair in his first season with the capital club.

The uncapped 27-year-old lock forward, who joined from Harlequins last summer, spent some time on the injury list at the start of last season. Once recovered, however, he put in some impressive performances, for which he was rewarded with a place in the Scotland squad for the summer tour.

“I’m proper buzzing – I’ve loved it here,” Young said on the Edinburgh website after his new deal was announced. “It was a tough start being injured but, even then, bonding with this group was great.

“When I got back playing, it was brilliant. I’ve loved playing in this jersey, in front of the crowd at DAM Health Stadium. It’s a great place to play and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“I feel like the style fits with how I want to play. I like the way Mike coaches too. I enjoy getting my hands on the ball, putting a bit of footwork in and putting a bit of pace into things.”

Blair added: “We’ve been really happy with Glen’s contribution this season and we’re excited to see him develop his game further next year. It’s brilliant that he’s extended terms with the club.

“Glen came back from injury really strong and showcased the kind of athleticism that makes him a game-changing type of player, who is equally adept at lock and six.

“Glen was hugely deserving of his Scotland call-up after a promising end to the season. Hopefully he’ll get the chance to wear the thistle and represent his country this summer.”

Meanwhile, prop Sam Grahamslaw, released by Edinburgh at the end of the season, has signed for English Championship side Jersey Reds. Grahamslaw joins two other Scots props, ex-Glasgow man Adam Nicol and former Ayrshire Bulls player Steven Longwell, at the ambitious Channel Islands club.
