You've been cooking roast potatoes wrong as chef shares 'secret' ingredient

According to a Michelin-trained chef, there's a secret ingredient that everyone should be adding to their roast potatoes in order to make them taste "perfect" - but you may be uncertain to try it at first.

There are plenty of roast potato hacks out there, from the preparation to the seasoning, that promise perfectly crispy yet fluffy roasties that your friends and family will love.

But it turns out that adding a drizzle of Marmite before putting them in the oven is the key to making them taste their best, according to Masterchef judge Poppy O'Toole.

The Daily Star reports that you can also put a generous helping into the water when you're boiling the potatoes too, for extra flavour and a gorgeous golden-brown cover.

Poppy, who has over 3.8 million followers on TikTok, shared the unusual tip as she's no stranger to showing the world the versatile and tasty things you can do with a simple potato.

She says that adding two tablespoons of Marmite to roasties in place of salt can give them an extra savoury kick.

"Loads of you have been cooking my Marmite roast potatoes and loving them," she says.

"I can safely say I’ve made it my life’s work to nail the perfect roast potato and I’m proud to say I’ve cracked it."

This unusual yet helpful tip has proven to be very popular with Poppy's followers, as they flocked to the comments to thank the judge for sharing it.

One fan posted: “I am salivating on my way to the store for Marmite and potatoes...Thank you!!!”

Another commented: "My dad does these all the time for years. How is everyone now catching onto this!!!"

And a third penned: "Can’t stand marmite but these look amazeballs."

It comes after a celebrity chef shared another flavour hack for the best-tasting roasties, saying we've been doing it wrong our whole lives.

Great British Menu winner Richard Bainbridge says you should sprinkle a crushed-up OXO cube over your potatoes before roasting them, as he says this will make them taste "epic".
