Maverick federal MP Bob Katter has come out swinging ahead of nation-wide anti-migration rallies, threatening to punch a journalist who asked about his heritage.

The 80-year-old confronted the TV reporter during an extraordinary press conference, thrusting a fist in his face when questioned about his family's Lebanese history.
