Fiji is considered one of the world’s most idyllic vacation destinations, but, at least for North Americans, it is often much too far and world’s most idyllic vacation destinations but, at least for North Americans, it is often much too far and too expensive to get to.
Direct flights to Nadi from San Francisco, Los Angeles or Honolulu will take 14 hours and set one back a couple of thousand dollars. Some travelers will make Fiji a stop on a larger tour of the Oceania area that includes countries like Australia and New Zealand, but this is also the privilege of those with ample time and resources.

As part of its efforts to attract travelers who might not have otherwise considered a trip there, Fiji’s flagship airline, Fiji Airways, created a sale in which one can buy a ticket for the end of 2024 or the first half of 2025 for as little as $709 round-trip.

To take advantage of a fare that could otherwise cost as much as $1,000 in each direction, one needs to go on the airline’s website and search for flights between Aug. 1, 2024, and June 9, 2025 (blackout dates are Dec. 12 to Dec. 31 for flights to Fiji and Aug. 1 to Aug. 6, 2024, as well as Dec. 25 to Jan. 17, 2025, for flights back to the U.S.) The major caveat is that travel needs to be booked and paid for by the end of July 4

Along with only being available for the least busy flight days, usually in the middle of the week, the $709 price will be for the Lite fare that includes a carry-on bag and one meal, and some snacks (it is a 14-hour flight, after all!) but charges extra for checked baggage.
“You can opt to travel LITE with a carry-on bag and still enjoy a complimentary meal, beverages, and entertainment on every flight,” the airline explains further on its website. “Or, add some VALUE with a checked bag or upgrade to COMFORT with two checked bags and seat selection to ensure the entire family is comfortable. Alternatively, you may opt for PLUS with additional perks such as extra legroom and priority boarding. The choice is entirely yours."
While long a popular vacation destination for Australians and New Zealanders by virtue of its proximity, Fiji has recently been going through a period of peak popularity among travelers from different parts of the word. At the start of the year, Fiji Airways released an earnings report showing that its profits grew by nearly 67% from 2022 to 2023 to a record FJ$1.77 billion ($778 million USD). In total, the airline ran 26,586 flights carrying 2.1 million passengers.
