You can fly your name to the Moon for free on a landmark NASA mission - here's how

NASA wants to send humans back to the Moon - and a mission scheduled for later this year will pave the way towards making that ambition a reality. Artemis I will be the first flight test of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, with NASA having set the goal of landing the first woman and first person of colour on Earth's only natural satellite.

However, no-one will be travelling on Artemis I, as it is set to be an uncrewed flight - but there is a way anyone can have a presence on board regardless. NASA is offering people a chance to fly their name around the Moon for free, and getting involved is easy.

Everyone's names will be included on a flash drive that will orbit the Moon on board Artemis I, formerly known as formerly Exploration Mission-1 and described by NASA as "the first in a series of increasingly complex missions that will enable human exploration to the Moon and Mars."

To fly a name to the Moon, people should click here and then click on the button that reads 'get boarding pass'. This leads to a form that needs to be filled in with first name, last name and a custom pin code which must be remembered to access the boarding pass later.

Everyone who signs up will be sent a QR code to virtually join the launch, which is set to happen by this summer.

NASA says: "All eyes will be on the historic Launch Complex 39B when Orion and the Space Launch System (SLS) lift off for the first time from NASA's modernised Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission will demonstrate our commitment and capability to extend human existence to the Moon and beyond."

The agency says it wants to "build a long-term human presence at the Moon for decades to come."
