Yellow weather warning for Nottinghamshire as thunder storms expected

The MET Office have issued a weather warning for Nottinghamshire and other parts of the country. A yellow weather warning has been issued for Friday, September 9, from 12pm until 7pm as heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected.

Nottingham will have temperatures averaging at 18C, but a thunderstorm is expected after 2pm. Light rain is also predicted for this afternoon until 6pm.

Due to the storms there is a good chance that driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and possibly hail, the MET Office warns, which will lead to longer journey times by car and bus. The MET Office has also warned of potential flooding and damage to buildings and structures from lightening strikes.

Thunderstorms can occur during any time of the year but during the UK's summer months, storms are more likely to produce large hail, gusty winds and torrential downpours that can cause disruption to transport networks and damage property. Those who are planning to travel during the storm are reminded that even moderate rain can reduce your ability to see and be seen, so if it's time to use your wipers, it's time to slow down.

Drivers are also asked to leave larger gaps from moving traffic in front and to keep your eyes on the road, as spray from other vehicles can suddenly reduce visibility.
