UPDATE: Flights at Aberdeen Airport have now resumed although passengers have been advised to continue to check the status of their flight and to take "extra care when travelling to the airport".
A YELLOW warning for snow and ice for most of Scotland has been extended.
The Met Office alert was originally due to come to an end at midday today (January 7) although will now continue until midday on Wednesday, January 8.
The forecaster said that “further rain, sleet and snow showers” will lead to some travel disruption.
Meanwhile, Aberdeen Airport has been forced to halt flights.
A statement on Twitter/X read: “Our teams have been working throughout the night to clear snow and de-ice the airfield.
“Due to the ongoing freezing conditions it’s been necessary to pause operations. Flights will resume when it is safe to do so.
“We would advise passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline and to take extra care when travelling to the airport.”
The Met Office said to expect the following:
- Some roads and railways to be affected by longer journey times and some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
- Potential injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
The warning covers most of the Highlands as well as Orkney and Shetland and Scotland’s west coast.
Inverness and Aberdeen are covered by the warning although other major cities, such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, are not.
